Review Text

  • By Mr. T. Kilner on 14 April 2006

This book is a great introduction to surgery for medical students, with a focus on examination and diagnosis. This book is lucidly written and gives detailed explanations (and pictures) of the signs and symptoms of each (general) surgical disease. There are no lists of investigations etc, but that's not what this book is about! This is a book about logical history taking and examination technique which are fundamental to good surgical practice. It's fine knowing the indications for a vagotomy but if you cannot obtain a good history and examine the patient properly then you are never going to get that far! I cannot recommend this book enough.

A consultant at the hospital recommended this to me (I am a medical student). The pictures are great and it gives answers to a lot of the random questions consultants throw at you during ward rounds.

    Very informative

The book does what it says- gives the symptoms and signs of surgical disease but to use as a revision resource it is incomplete without management. I frequently had to refer to the OHCM when using it to get a complete picture. Having said that the pictures are fantastic, signs and symptoms are laid out in a clear and through manner. Useful as an adjunct not as a main text.-final yr GKT student
